About this world

PDS 70 c is a gas giant orbiting PDS 70, an orange dwarf (type K7) 369 light-years from Earth. It is about 2 times the size of Jupiter and holds 7.5 Jupiter masses.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 1,054 K (781 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied in one spectroscopic observation.

It was discovered in 2019 by direct imaging with European Southern Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph. PDS 70 has 2 known planets; the others are PDS 70 b.
