About this world

PDS 70 b is a gas giant orbiting PDS 70, an orange dwarf (type K7) 369 light-years from Earth. It is about 2 times the size of Jupiter and holds 3.2 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 119 years at 21 AU from its star.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 1,392 K (1,119 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied in one spectroscopic observation.

It was discovered in 2018 by direct imaging with Paranal Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph. PDS 70 has 2 known planets; the others are PDS 70 c.
