About this world

VHS J125601.92-125723.9 b is a gas giant orbiting VHS J125601.92-125723.9, a cool red dwarf (type M7.5) 41.4 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.2 times the size of Jupiter and holds 16 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 15,880 years at 350 AU from its star, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.68).

Its equilibrium temperature is about 1,194 K (921 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied: 4 spectroscopic observations.

It was discovered in 2015 by direct imaging with Paranal Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
