About this world

Ross 458 c is a gas giant orbiting Ross 458, a cool red dwarf (type M2) 37.5 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.2 times the size of Jupiter and holds 6 Jupiter masses.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 4 K (−269 °C): too cold for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2010 by direct imaging with Las Campanas Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
