About this world

Oph 11 b is a gas giant orbiting Oph 11, a cool red dwarf (type M9) 444 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 14 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 19,986 years at 240 AU from its star.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 2,175 K (1,902 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2006 by direct imaging with Gemini Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
