About this world

NY Vir b is a gas giant orbiting NY Vir, a hot blue star 1.77 thousand light-years from Earth. It is about 1.2 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 2.3 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 8.65 years at 3.3 AU from its star.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 338 K (65 °C): too cold for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2011 by timing variations with Multiple Observatories. Pulsar, eclipse or transit timings drift as an unseen companion tugs on them. NY Vir has 2 known planets; the others are NY Vir c.
