About this world
Luhman 16 b is a gas giant orbiting Luhman 16 A, a star. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 29 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 26.5 years at 3.5 AU from its star, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.34).
Its equilibrium temperature is about 0 K (−273 °C): too cold for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied: 2 spectroscopic observations.
It was discovered in 2017 by direct imaging with Multiple Observatories. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
