About this world

Kepler-553 c is a gas giant orbiting Kepler-553, an orange dwarf 2.38 thousand light-years from Earth. It is about 1 times the size of Jupiter and holds 6.7 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 328 days at 0.9 AU from its star, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.35).

Its equilibrium temperature is about 251 K (−22 °C), which places it in the conservative habitable zone: the band where liquid water could exist on a rocky surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2016 by transit with Kepler. A planet crosses its star and dims it by a tiny, periodic fraction. Kepler-553 has 2 known planets; the others are Kepler-553 b.
