About this world

Kepler-48 f is a gas giant orbiting Kepler-48, an orange dwarf 1 thousand light-years from Earth. It is about 1.2 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass), with at least 0.94 Jupiter masses (a minimum, measured by radial velocity). It completes an orbit every 14.3 years at 5.7 AU from its star.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 96 K (−177 °C): too cold for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2023 by radial velocity with W. M. Keck Observatory. The star wobbles toward and away from us, Doppler-shifting its spectrum. Kepler-48 has 5 known planets; the others are Kepler-48 b, Kepler-48 c, Kepler-48 d and Kepler-48 e.
