About this world
HIP 8541 b is a gas giant orbiting HIP 8541, a giant star (type K2III/I) 506 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 7.7 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 5.07 years at 3.7 AU from its star, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.36).
Its equilibrium temperature is about 305 K (32 °C), which places it in the optimistic habitable zone: the band where liquid water could exist on a rocky surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.
It was discovered in 2016 by radial velocity with Multiple Observatories. The star wobbles toward and away from us, Doppler-shifting its spectrum. HIP 8541 has 2 known planets; the others are HD 11343 c.
