About this world

HD 80606 b is a gas giant orbiting HD 80606, a yellow, Sun-like star (type G5) 217 light-years from Earth. It is about 1 times the size of Jupiter and holds 4.2 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 111 days at 0.46 AU from its star, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.93).

Its equilibrium temperature is about 405 K (132 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied: 4 spectroscopic observations, 2 of them with the James Webb Space Telescope.

It was discovered in 2001 by radial velocity with Multiple Observatories. The star wobbles toward and away from us, Doppler-shifting its spectrum.
