About this world

HD 181433 b is a gas giant orbiting HD 181433, an orange dwarf (type K3IV) 87.7 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 5.4 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 9.37 days at 0.083 AU from its star, closer than Mercury is to the Sun, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.4).

Its equilibrium temperature is about 733 K (459 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2008 by radial velocity with La Silla Observatory. The star wobbles toward and away from us, Doppler-shifting its spectrum. HD 181433 has 3 known planets; the others are HD 181433 c and HD 181433 d.
