About this world

HD 160691 b is a gas giant orbiting HD 160691, a yellow, Sun-like star (type G3IV-V) 50.9 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.2 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 4.3 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 645 days at 1.5 AU from its star.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 262 K (−11 °C), which places it in the conservative habitable zone: the band where liquid water could exist on a rocky surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2000 by radial velocity with Anglo-Australian Telescope. The star wobbles toward and away from us, Doppler-shifting its spectrum. HD 160691 has 4 known planets; the others are HD 160691 d, HD 160691 e and HD 160691 c.
