About this world
HD 142 b is a gas giant orbiting HD 142, a yellow-white F-type star (type F7V) 85.4 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 7.1 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 351 days at 1 AU from its star.
Its equilibrium temperature is about 358 K (85 °C): too cold for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.
It was discovered in 2001 by radial velocity with Anglo-Australian Telescope. The star wobbles toward and away from us, Doppler-shifting its spectrum. HD 142 has 3 known planets; the others are HD 142 A d and HD 142 c.
