About this world

GJ 676 A b is a gas giant orbiting GJ 676 A, a cool red dwarf (type M0) 52.3 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 5.8 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 2.88 years at 1.7 AU from its star, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.32).

Its equilibrium temperature is about 114 K (−160 °C): too cold for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2010 by radial velocity with La Silla Observatory. The star wobbles toward and away from us, Doppler-shifting its spectrum. GJ 676 A has 4 known planets; the others are GJ 676 A d, GJ 676 A e and GJ 676 A c.
