About this world

COCONUTS-2 b is a gas giant orbiting COCONUTS-2 A, a cool red dwarf (type M3V) 35.5 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter and holds 7.5 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 1.1e6 years at 7,506 AU from its star.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 493 K (220 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied: 2 spectroscopic observations.

It was discovered in 2021 by direct imaging with NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
