About this world
CFHTWIR-Oph 98 b is a gas giant orbiting CFHTWIR-Oph 98 A, a cool red dwarf (type M9-L1). It is about 1.9 times the size of Jupiter and holds 7.8 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 22,012 years at 200 AU from its star.
Its equilibrium temperature is about 1,800 K (1,527 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.
It was discovered in 2020 by direct imaging with Hubble Space Telescope. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
