About this world

AF Lep b is a gas giant orbiting AF Lep, a yellow-white F-type star (type F8) 87.6 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.2 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 3.6 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 24.4 years at 9 AU from its star.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 1,400 K (1,127 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied: 5 spectroscopic observations.

It was discovered in 2023 by direct imaging with Paranal Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
