About this world
51 Eri b is a gas giant orbiting 51 Eri, a yellow-white F-type star (type F0IV) 97.1 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.1 times the size of Jupiter (its size estimated from its mass) and holds 11 Jupiter masses. It completes an orbit every 24.9 years at 10 AU from its star, on a strongly elongated orbit (e = 0.57).
Its equilibrium temperature is about 807 K (534 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium. Its atmosphere has already been studied: 6 spectroscopic observations.
It was discovered in 2015 by direct imaging with Gemini Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
