About this world

1RXS J160929.1-210524 b is a gas giant orbiting 1RXS J160929.1-210524, an orange dwarf (type K7V) 454 light-years from Earth. It is about 1.7 times the size of Jupiter and holds 9.4 Jupiter masses.

Its equilibrium temperature is about 1,700 K (1,427 °C): far too hot for liquid water on its surface. At its size it almost certainly keeps a deep envelope of hydrogen and helium.

It was discovered in 2008 by direct imaging with Gemini Observatory. The planet itself is photographed, its star blocked by a coronagraph.
